How to Stop Running on Empty—Practical Ways to Refuel Your Soul

What’s Filling Your Cup Today?
Confession time—I’ve spent far too many mornings waking up and attempting to run on E. And I don’t mean a “just need coffee” kind of empty—I mean spiritually, emotionally, and mentally drained before my feet even hit the floor.
I’ve rolled over, grabbed my phone before wiping the sleep out of my eyes, and started scrolling. Winging it. Hoping the devotional I read yesterday—or last week—will somehow carry me through another day. Or that checking off my to-do list will make up for the exhaustion and procrastination that’s been piling up.
But it doesn’t. And it shows up everywhere.
When Burnout Takes Over
Starting my day like this always leaves me running on fumes. It turns into short tempers with my kids, feeling like I’m not measuring up, comparing myself to the highlight reels of other moms, and ending the day even more “tired” than when I started.
Worse yet, it reveals something deeper—maybe I’ve been believing the lie that I can do this on my own. That yesterday’s scripture or last week’s prayer was enough to carry me through today. That I’ve got enough grace stored up to pour out, even when I’m completely drained.
But let me tell you, that’s never true.
What I’ve Learned About Being Filled
Waking up while the house is still quiet—before the chaos and noise starts—has been one of the hardest but most important shifts I’ve made. Filling my soul first, before my schedule, has changed everything.
Because here’s the truth: I need God’s reminders every day of who I am in Him. I need the stillness to hear His voice and the assurance that I don’t have to do it all in my own strength. And the days I make space to be filled? I feel the difference—kindness flows easier, my words are softer, and I have the boldness to handle what comes my way.
Practical Ways to Reset and Fill Your Cup
I know it’s not always easy to carve out time, so here are a few simple ways to reset—whether it’s first thing in the morning or in the middle of a chaotic day:
- Spend 10-15 Minutes in Scripture. Pick a short passage, sit with it, and let it speak to you. God’s Word is living and always timely. Read more on creating meaningful rhythms in your homeschool.
- Listen to Worship Music. Turn it on while getting ready, making breakfast, or driving. Let it set the tone for your day. Here’s a devotional idea to encourage your mornings.
- Journal and Write Affirmations. Remind yourself of God’s truth about who you are and what He’s called you to do. Journaling can help you reset and find clarity.
- Get Outside. Take a quick walk, sit in the sun, or eat a meal outside. Fresh air and movement can help reset your mind. Find more tips on creating routines in small spaces.
Grace to Start Again—No Matter Where You Are The best part? At any point in the day, you can hit reset. It’s never too late to step away, breathe, and allow yourself to be filled.
I pray today that God meets you right where you are. That He reminds you there’s no shame in being tired, no guilt in needing rest, and no failure in pausing to be filled. Because the truth is—He’s the only One who can sustain you.
Scripture to Hold Onto: “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” – Psalm 73:26
So today, let’s stop trying to run on empty. Let’s choose to be filled—by the One who’s never running out.
