Fostering an environment that celebrates literacy is a daily task. Though my kids can get lost in a book, it’s been a journey to get there. I constantly encourage other parents to be creative, because reading opens an incredible world. Creating a love for reading in kids takes intentionality.
From visiting your local library to creating your own, these tips will help you! Creativity can come in how we story tell and with the help of incredible resources like Vooks! My kids have fallen in love
Vooks is an interactive reading system that helps kids learn from stories, get along with others, and develop kindness and values. From the animation of the stories to the myriad of resources and activities that accompany each – it’s AMAZING!
What kid doesn’t love a mix of reading without feeling like they’re “reading?” VOOKS provides that experience and so much more!
The benefits of reading far outweigh what often our kids can find “boring.” Here are some tangible tips that have helped us along our journey to create a love of reading!
1. Normalize Reading
More often than not our kids see us and imitate us. So what’s normal in your every day routine? I have to be honest for me it’s being on my phone. So in shaping good habits I’ve had to become consistent in what I hope my kids do as well. That’s pulling out a book and joining them during reading time. As they soak in new stories I do the same! I’ve even found myself enjoying the VOOKS stories along with them (don’t tell them!)
2. Make reading FUN!
Kids love to explore and have FUN! Reading sometimes can feel like a chore and it’s our task to introduce the benefits of it! To share with our kids that reading takes us to places we’ve never been. That’s why we’ve enjoyed adding VOOKS resources to our reading experiences. We also love recreating a favorite portion of a book. Art projects, short commercial videos, and more can connect reading to activities your children love!

3. Connect and share the benefits!
Even though the benefits of reading might be obvious to us, it may nor be as easy to see children the actual advantages of reading. I constantly share with our boys that reading is crucial for them when playing video games, solving problems, and even helping me cook.
The Center for the Economics of Education state “The best predictor of how skilled the adult will be is his or her level in primary school.” The best education systems worldwide require children to be in school from anywhere between 35 – 45 weeks to get the most out of classroom education.
If you need some help here are several benefits to talk with them about:
- Growth in vocabulary!
- Greater imagination
- Ability to develop empathy
- Improvement in concentration
- Connection between parent and child
- Social skills and interaction with others
4. Create your own stories!
The art of story telling and using your own imagination never gets old! I love helping our kids take pieces of books they read and create alternate endings. Whether you take a topic, find funny adjectives, or create a story about a family photo – this always brings extra laughs and spurs the imagination.
We also enjoying keeping a book of stories our kids create. It has illustrations and short writings that they’ve put together. I often look back on their early stories as they’ve evolved over time.

Reading is truly an incredible part of the academic process and life. I could not imagine my own childhood without certain books. Honestly, even as an adult I glean constantly from authors and the knowledge their content provides.
I’m so thankful for programs like VOOKS! My kids have absolutely loved taking in new concepts, laughing with characters, and learning. That’s always my favorite part. Is to watch them learn. How wonderful it is to learn and grow all while having fun!
How are you engaging and creating spaces for your young readers? Is it regular trips to the library? Or maybe you do a read-aloud every night! Whatever it is, stay consistent and enjoy the journey!
