As you know when we started off with our home it was quite the challenge of finding out what to change and remodel first. I love our home and you can find out more here of how far it’s come…and honestly still coming. We’ve made some mistakes along the way in efforts to save money since it’s not easy owning and home and staying within budget. With that said, over the last several years we’ve learned a few things and hopefully from our mistakes you’ll be able to avoid them as well.
Here are just three tips that can help you have a successful home remodeling project:
- Use a licensed & insured contractor: Here’s the thing, just because you “know” the person or they did a decent job on someone else’s home…doesn’t mean that they will do the same for you. We hired someone who said they were licensed & insured, but later found out they simply worked for an actual company that was licensed and insured – he simply was doing this as a side job. This contractor didn’t have the slightest clue of how to remodel our kitchen appropriately and we paid for it in the end. Making sure that your contractor is truly licensed & insured is worth it every single time…especially if the job doesn’t go as planned.
- Have a realistic budget: Any and all house upgrades cost money, and that’s okay. Don’t get me wrong, we live in a very budget conscious home. However, this doesn’t cause us to skip over when we should and do invest into our remodeling projects. This is where as we look to remodel our kitchen I’m excited to see the myriad of options provided by Richmond VA Premier Surfaces. Not only do their locations provide incredible showrooms for inspiration, they work with to achieve your remodeling visions at varying price points. Investing into the right items such as your countertop (which their selection is fantastic) is something Mike and I completely agree is a must this time around.
- It doesn’t all have to be done at once: This is a challenge for me as I like to start and finish a project as quickly as possible. Remodeling and construction is taxing on the normalcy of life, especially when it affects everyone. I remember when we were working on our floors how it literally was over a month until we finally finished the project. That was tough as we couldn’t let the boys walk around much upstairs, but we needed to still live. Taking the time to gradually finish your projects I’ve come to find helps alleviate the pressure financially and mentally for us. When we know we can work on different areas a little bit at a time, we plan better and prepare ourselves.
So be encouraged friends! As you go through your own journey of home remodeling I hope that you find some value in what I’ve shared. We are using these same tips as we prep for our second go at a kitchen remodel within the next few months. I also wanted to share a bit more about Premier Surfaces, as we look to connect with them for our kitchen counters!

Oh my gosh, I can totally relate! We bought our first house a year ago and I want to do so many renovations. We ended up with a new fridge and kitchen floor because of a leek from when they installed the new fridge (old one died). Once the floor was changed our cabinets didn’t match, so of course we had to paint the cupboards! LOL. I have so many other things on our list but need to remember that this is our first home and we can’t do it all. Thanks for the great blog!
