Choosing the right diaper bag honestly is up there with the right crib, baby name, and even car seat. Mama you’re no longer carrying a purse, your functioning for two or even more littles. However, diaper bags can sometimes feel bulky and a pain to carry. Hopefully with these tips, you’ll know how to best pack your diaper bag successfully!
There are lots of options to choose from when it comes to diaper bags. The key things I look for are durability, functionality, and longevity. With four kids I have had my share of bags that have broken, torn, or just didn’t fit things like I needed them to. So over time I have acknowledged the value in purchasing a well crafted bag. For me it’s crazy to say, but I’ve found all three elements from my Sarah Wells Bags. No seriously, this small business really knows what they’re doing when it comes to diaper bags for moms.

Whether you’re a backpack or tote diaper bag mama there are some basic essentials we all need to have at ALL times! So let’s breakdown how to best organize and pack your diaper bag in 4 different categories. What I love best about Sarah Wells Bags is it caters to pumping and nursing mamas so well. Each bag has a separate compartment for your pump! So I will be including that aspect in here as well.
So let’s pack your diaper bag!
Compartmentalize It! Divide all the items you use into 3 or 4 main categories. For example: diapering, food, clothing, and miscellaneous. Once you’ve done that place the items in piles and you can store like items using containers such as the Cold Gold bag or the Pumparoo. When you shift your mind into groups you’re able to divide and conquer your mental list. I find it easiest to put items in zippered bags so I can quickly grab them.
Here’s what my personal checklist looks like while I pack:
- Diapering:
- Diapers (overpack these AND check sizes)
- Travel wipes
- Portable changing pad
- Plastic bags for poop diapers
- Food or if Nursing (your pump & bags, pen, etc.):
- Milk and/or food
- Eating utensil
- Bibs/burp cloths
- Bottle and/or Sippy cup
- Clothing – ALL the extra clothes (accidents happen!)
- Onsies or shirts & pants
- Socks
- Weather appropriate clothing (hats, jackets, etc.)
- Miscellaneous:
- Lip balm
- Diaper cream/ Aquaphor
- Snacks
- Blanket and/or Muslin blankets (my favorite)
The great part about Sarah Wells Bags is they have a special side compartment just for pumping parts. Even if you’re not a pumping mama, that’s a great areas to place things that need to stay separate. That area can be used for your food items or for all the diapering necessities.

If you’re in the market for a new bag that can transition through the stages of motherhood, look into investing in a Sarah Wells Bag. The styles are versatile and the functionality cannot be beat. And make sure to use the above checklist when you’re packing for your next outing!
