Handmade Holiday: London & Granger

November 11, 2013 Leave a Comment

This next handmade business owner is one I “met” doing a Hoop Art Swap! She is ridiculously gifted and her heart matches that ten times more. Each piece in her shop is made with care! She is also hosting an insta-sale…possibly TOMORROW so be ready! This is definitely a shop you don’t want to miss out on!

At a young age I developed a love for making, my godmother, sewed a brand new outfit for me everyday when I was young, and my dad would sew me pj’s when I was older. All throughout school, elementary, middle and high school I loved art, cutting up paper, coloring and designing! In college I

decided to pursue a degree in Digital Media and in 2005 (wow that was such a long time ago) I graduated with a BA in digital media with a focus on video editing, but my true love is designing and creating tangible items. I love making things with my hands! Needless to say I think I lost touch with that love, but in 2011 when I became a mom, and then a stay at home mom I got inspired to start making again. I started making blankets for my daughter, I spy books and even a car seat privacy cover. I was quickly reminded how much I loved this kind of stuff, and with a little bit of time squeezed in between here naps I was able to sit down and make!  You know that saying “makers gonna make”, that’s me. Even within all the hustle and bustle I always found the time to make. My husband is such a great encourager he is my #1 fan, he cheers me on every day and rooted for me to open London and Granger, it was with his support and encouragement that ventured in the world of a small handmade business.

I’m drawn to fabric and paper, paper goodies and fabric lovelies! I just love all the different patterns, textures and possibilities you can dream up! When my Etsy shop first opened less then a year ago  (www.LondonandGranger.etsy.com) it was just paper products, mini cards, tags, and handmade cards. A customer sent me a convo about possibly including custom text to something I had already made and well it was because of her that I opened up London and Granger to custom orders, and since then I’ve created several custom order mini tags for baby and bridal showers and has become one of my favorite types of orders, designing something just for you and truly unique.

But it’s slowly starting to evolve into more, I’m now also making hoop art and zippered pouches. Remember when I said I love cutting things up and piecing things together,  that is reflected in many of my items, different fabrics, or different papers working together to make something I think is pretty neat! I also very recently started playing with printing on fabric, I’m in love, smittin’, it’s my modern twist on the classic embroidery, that paired with coordinating/complementing fabrics I’m in heaven!

My items are available for purchase through Etsy, at www.LondonandGranger.etsy.com or through Instagram @shop_londonandgranger you may see one item on Etsy but you may not see it on Instagram and vice versa. My fabric items are made in limited quantities, most times just one will be created, in the same pattern, so chances are your item will be exclusive to you!

I just finished my first mini sale @shop_londonandgranger and I’m already planning/hoping to have another mini sale sometime in November, I’m shooting for November 12th! Not quite sure yet what I’ll be in the mood to make maybe some Christmas stockings, garlands, hoops and pouches. We’ll see!

As I reflect on today, I’m most thankful that be As I reflect on today, I’m most thankful that because of the work done for social justice and continuously happening now, there are resources to celebrate diversity.

Growing up there were 2 options for hair - having “good hair” or achieving “good” hair through relaxers. Natural hair was reserved for mixed girls who had bouncy curls and length. I constantly wished to be “that” mixed girl, instead of seeing the gorgeousness of who I am.

Developing the confidence to love all of me and the hair that I have took years. Lots of tears and redefining beauty.

I’m so grateful that our boys don’t have to wish for anything other than who they are. Being able to celebrate beautiful natural hair in all its texture has built confidence in them that’s priceless.

So today I’m celebrating and thanking @youngkinghaircare for making even more space to diversify natural hair for little kings like mine. To remind them that there is value in exactly who they are ♥️ and WE SEE YOU!!

The ability to find these hair products on storefront shelves now in Target is beyond amazing for our family.

If you haven’t checked them out - PLEASE DO!! We love the product and the family behind it! #makedreamsreal #naturalhairboys
If we can gift our kids anything - quality time ov If we can gift our kids anything - quality time overrides it all.

Staying intentionally present and less annoyed at the little things. Also taking out my Nikon more this month 📷

In just a few months we’ll be celebrating 10 yea In just a few months we’ll be celebrating 10 years.

I love who we are today, because of how we committed to growing/learning through the last nine years.

Working on ourselves has made room to see the worth and value of us together.

Expecting your partner to be everything, fix everything, and fill everything - will leave you with nothing. For me to be at my best I have learned that space and role is reserved for Christ.

Releasing those expectations, owning your growth, and finding ourselves deeper in Jesus continues to be our glue.

That and lots of random 😏 time... these kids didn’t show up on their own. #ourownmarriagegoals
Since December we have been practicing how to rest Since December we have been practicing how to rest as a family - real soul rest and it’s been life giving.

On Friday evenings we cook together and disconnect. Last weekend we made this challah bread and it was delicious! Mike and I look through new recipes to prep for our time. This recipe is on the blog!

Slowing down last year taught us how unhealthy being “busy” and doing more was for us individually, as a family, and even for our kids. We were functioning in rhythms that may have appeared to be beneficial - but had negative side effects.

2020 allowed us to refocus and shift. Mike and I knew God desires for our home to benefit most - because it’s our first ministry.

Family rhythms look unique to you and I pray yours is reaping the best it can this week ♥️ #familyrhythms #familyisourfirstministry
