As the weather begins to cool down and the leaves turn their gorgeous shades of rich red, burnt orange, and sunshine yellows the seasonal shift for autumn is making its way into our home. I’m sure you’re just as excited to take our the pumpkins and lef covered wreaths just as I am. As you change over your decor, you’re probably pulling out blankets, throw pillows, and even accents that only come out a few months each year. What’s your favorite part of fall decor? If you ask my husband, it would be the candles. He has already gone to Bath & Body Works to stock up ha!
It can be a challenge to find a balance between having too much décor, splurging, or too little (depending on your preference). Every time I walk through Hobby Lobby or Target I’m drawn to spend a ridiculous amount of money on seasonal items…because they’re just so dang cute! But, since our bank account doesn’t really work like that I have to be thrifty.
Here’s how you can save money and prep!
As the seasons change, I know that most of our décor rotates and therefore isn’t necessarily worth a lot of splurging. So, if you’re wanting to get into the spirit of the new season here are some simple and inexpensive ways that you too can get your home Fall ready:
- Use Pillow Covers! I love buying decorative pillows, but I’ve found having pillow inserts and interchangeable covers is the best idea ever! I usually buy mine at IKEA and pick up different pillow covers throughout the year that I like. There pillow inserts range from $1 to $5 and their covers from $3 to $20 (but you can find them on Amazon as well!). If you would rather DIY your pillow covers there are some great tutorials just think this one!
- Shop a season AHEAD! All of the beautiful homes online can give you major “wish I could just redo my ENTIRE house today” if you’re not careful. You’ve heard me share here before or on my Instagram that I usually buy seasonal items a year ahead. This is one of the most effective ways I’ve been able to acquire some of my favorite décor items. With that said I’ve got quite a bit of stuff I sort through and am always happy to have things I need rather then paying full price for items I may not want later on.
- Head to the Laundromat! My kids love our fall blankets, because they’re extra
cozy and extremely warm. However, though we store them in bins throughout the year, they need a good cleaning prior to their daily usage. Since our washing machine is a decent size, I prefer to head to a laundromat for this feat. Using one like The Clothes Spin is a perfect, affordable, and clean option! For my friends in Lynchburg, VA area The Clothes Spin is a locally owned and operated 24 hours / 7 days a week, self-serve coin laundromat. From its cleanliness, safety/security at any hours, minimized wait times, affordable rates, and friendly staff it’s really a great way to knock out all of that blanket washing quickly! One of its cool features is their machines can be coin or app operated, look at technology. So if you’re like me who doesn’t carry much cash anymore, you’re in luck! Also, because we wash our heavy fall blankets, you don’t have to worry about over filling your washer either because these can wash over 80lbs!
- Stock Up On Firewood- If you’re lucky to have a fireplace that lets you heat your home with, then you’ll want to make sure that your all stocked up. If you chop your own wood, make sure that it’s dry and ready. It’s best to cover your firewood and store it away from the house but also can give you an easy access to get to it.
As were all enjoying the last few days of summer, make sure that you, your family and most importantly your home is prepared for the upcoming fall season. Properly maintaining your home can also enhance the value and appeal to potential buyers down the road as well as making it less effort to manage if a crisis occurs later. When the chilly weather comes, you and your home will be all set to go.
